From Bruce Tarran, Head Coach, Leicestershire LTC
Hi, everyone,
This weather is just great. Who could possibly stay indoors watching television when the sun is shining, the gates of Leicestershire Lawn Tennis Club lie open, even one of the 18 top quality courts is empty, and there is a tennis racquet, four tennis balls and someone to hit with???
Coaching:
Autumn term junior coaching is well under way but never too late to join in. Come along, have a go, and only pay for remaining sessions. All ages and standards. Forms at http://www.tarrantennis.co.uk/BRUCE'S%20Autumn%20Term%20Leaflet.pdf.
Adult coaching groups continue on Tuesdays, 9.30am Improvers, 10.45am Advanced. Fridays advanced at 9.30am. Saturday Improvers and Beginners at 2pm – all standards catered for. Not played tennis since school? Now is the time to change your life. Come back to tennis this Saturday at 2pm. Pay on the day. Members and non-members welcome. Be in touch if you have any questions.
Parent – Child Tournament:
I am arranging a Parent/Child Tournament this Sunday 2nd October at 3.30pm. At least one in each pairing should be a club member. “Children” should be Under 18. Cost is £12 per pair which includes great trophies, new balls and food after. Pairs will be put into small groups by standard. 20 pairs have already signed up on the board. If you wish to enter, let me know straight away.
THE Club Tournament:
The Club Tournament was superb this year, with good weather and Colin Ayling to thank, although not necessarily in that order. Finals Day was particularly excellent, with good crowds, great tennis, and a wonderful free barbecue. Thanks to the chefs – Colin Ayling, Andy Bakewell and Jane Gadsby.
Club Mens Singles Champion was Jonny Cloke for the 2nd year running, beating James Tutt in the final. Ladies Singles Champion was fifteen year old Jennifer Gadsby, beating her sister Jessica in the final.
In the Ladies Doubles Final the only non-Gadsby was on the winning side - Emilia Bakewell partnering Jess Gadsby, to beat sisters Jen and Bethany.
In the Mixed Doubles, Champions were Viraj Bhawsar and Jen Gadsby, beating George Thomas and Siobhan O’Gorman,
Mens Doubles Champions were myself and Jonny, beating Ian Thomas and Colin Ayling in the final. I also partnered Ian Thomas to beat Phil Nicholson and Stuart Bond in the Vets Mens Doubles, thereby proving that the most important tip in doubles is to find a much stronger partner than oneself!
The Vets Ladies Singles was won by Kathy Bakewell against Lucy Fairbrother. I won the Mens Vets Singles against Adam Moulson. Welsh international, Jon Walworth, added to his bulging trophy cabinet by beating Cliff Smith in the 55s final.
In the Vets Ladies Doubles, Lucy Fairbrother and Jane Gadsby beat Shirley Fox and Kathy Bakewell. In the Mixed Vets, Ian Nicholson and Lucy Fairbrother beat John Walworth and Sally Yarnall.
In the Handicap Singles Events – Rob Haines beat David Fowler and Emily Craven beat Sarah Shuttlewood. In Handicap Doubles events - Chloe Vaughan and Julia Soulsby beat Diana Bourne and Judith Brook, and Mike Greenwood and Franco Moreno beat Charlie Dall’Omo and Andrew Bowditch. Rob Haines and Julia Soulsby beat Karl Indans and Gill Brown.
Junior Finals were held alongside the Senior Finals, giving the whole day a wonderfully lively, high quality feel. Junior Titles were as Follows:
Boys Champion, Viraj Bhawsar beat Kieran O’Gorman.
Girls Champion, Jennifer Gadsby beat Bethany Gadsby.
U16s – Rohan Bassi beat Brett Parlour. Jen Gadsby beat Siobhan O’Gorman.
U14s – George Thomas beat Niraj Mavani. Siobhan O’Gorman beat Francesca Simpson.
U12s – Ricky Bassi beat James Bateman. Charlotte Clarke beat Rebecca Astill.
U10s – Owen Wilson beat Oscar Marriott-Clarke. Sarah Astill beat Charlotte Rainton.
U9s – Victor Wiles beat Max Marriott-Clarke.
U8s - Rachel Astill beat Millie Windram. Victor Wiles beat Max Marriott-Clarke.
Well done to all. A particular achievement – Jennifer Gadsby played 5 finals on one day. She was Ladies, Junior and U16 Club Singles Champion. She also won the Mixed Doubles and reached the final of the Ladies Doubles. A tiring, but satisfying, day!
Remarkably, Paul Cook didn’t feature in any finals, a little like Brazil failing to get past the World Cup Qualifying stage - just one of those freak events, I suppose. Other notable mentions were the juniors who reached adult open finals – George Thomas, Viraj Bhawsar, Siobhan O’Gorman and Bethany Gadsby.
Thanks to Junior Secretary, Jane Gadsby, for her help with the junior events. To Club President, Mike Piper, on his Presidential trophy-presenting skills. And thanks once again, from all of us, to Colin Ayling who gives up so much of his time to produce pleasure for so many.
Veterans:
As befits the 2010 Vets Club of the year, our Club teams are currently all at the semi-final stages in the National Clubs Competition at Mens 35s, 45s, 50s, 55s, and 60s, plus the Mixed 40/45s. Most Clubs would be delighted to reach one semi in a national event – remarkably we are still in six!
Results from the National Grass Court Championships at Wimbledon: Shirley Fox reached the 60s Final, and won the 55s Doubles. Mark Cox lost to Keith Bland in the 65s Final, but won the 65s Doubles. Gill Thompson won the 75s Doubles.
This year Leicestershire LTC Mens teams have represented Britain in the European Club Championships at Over 35, Over 45, and Over 55.
Representing Great Britain in the Super Seniors World Team Championships in Turkey in October are Club members Richard Tutt, Mark Cox, Keith Bland (65s), Shirley Fox (60s) and Gill Thompson (75s). Good luck to all.
Ian McChrystal continues to be an irrepressible beacon of quality amongst our more senior players. Having played number one at 55s, Ian also recently represented the County 50s against Oxfordshire. Whilst not actually winning any rubbers himself, the team undoubtedly benefitted immeasurably from Ian’s presence and enjoyed a 3-2 victory.
Unbelievable but true – the other day a club member told me she hadn’t seen my videos. Could this be you?? If so go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ztsnasbo-0k and enter a world of great comic film. Follow this up with http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wV3ATX0jWrc&feature=related, to laugh along with Martha and Emilia.
There are more at http://www.youtube.com/user/Tarrantennis. A visual treasure trove.
Juniors:
I would like to thank Gary Howard on behalf of the junior section, and the Club, for his kind and generous offer to, once again, support the Junior Tournament with a £100 donation towards the prizes. Gary is a great man, philanthropist, tennis member and owner of a most excellent Cleaning Company - Gary Howard Services, which can be found at www.gary-howard.co.uk.
The LTA has produced a Summer County Junior Leaderboard for the county. There are 6 age-groups, giving 12 overall winners, girls and boys. We are pleased that 4 of the 12 county winners are members at LLTC. Well done to Jennifer Gadsby, Niraj Mavani, Owen Wilson and Charlotte Clarke.
Social Events:
Phil Nicholson is organising a quiz night on Friday 30th September at 7pm. Sign-up is on the notice board.
Edwena Mackay, Ladies Captain extraordinaire, is organising a Ladies Team Supper on Thursday 6th October to celebrate a hugely successful season which, amongst other high spots, has resulted in LLTC having 3 ladies teams in the top division next year.
The Julia Reynolds Winter League starts on 10th October. Sign up by the 5th. Thanks to the ebullient Michael Philips for his wonderful organisation.
Winners of the Mixed Doubles Summer League were Dean Smith and Amanda Bennett. Michael Phillips and Alex Holman were 2nd with Michael Gibson and Val Noble 3rd.
The Squash League Matches start next week. Full fixture lists are on the boards. The first match is on Wednesday 5th October and spectators are always welcome.
